Terminology

Product Maintenance

SOS supports the product independently of the platforms that the product is operated for, see Product Maintenance

1) Supported Platforms

SOS compiles, tests and ships the product for supported platforms. Setup is available. Build support, installation support and product maintenance are provided for customers with commercial licenses.

2) Platforms with Limited Support

Users may JS7 - Build Binaries from the Sources. Build support, installation support and product maintenance are provided for customers with commercial licenses.

3) Distribution/Version

SOS provides support for product defects that occur due to specific operating system distributions as long as the vendor provides maintenance for the respective distribution.

4) Build Support

SOS supports the customer to build binaries from source code. This is available as a Service Request Support Option.

5) Use of Setup from supported platforms

The setup for supported Linux platforms is most probably compatible with other Linux platforms. However, SOS cannot guarantee that this setup will work for all Linux distributions.

6) Availability of binaries for Linux platforms

Binaries for supported Linux platforms are most probably compatible with other Linux platforms. However, SOS does not perform testing for all Linux distributions. SOS will fix issues reported from Linux platforms with limited support that can be reproduced on supported Linux platforms.

7) Availability of binaries for platforms with limited support

Binaries for platforms with limited support are provided for major and minor product releases. For bug-fix releases SOS does not perform testing for such platforms. Customers can build binaries for bug-fix releases from source code.

Platform Strategy

  • Platform-dependent JS7 Controller and JOC Cockpit
    • What it is about
      • The Controller is developed with Scala and Java. The JOC Cockpit is developed with Java. The source code is platform independent.
    • Why we focus JS7 Controller and JOC Cockpit releases to Windows and Linux
      • The simple reason is: effort.
      • We apply unit testing, integration testing and system testing for Windows and Linux platforms as these count for approx. 80% of the downloads for the JS7 product.
      • Extending support to additional Solaris® releases, HP-UX® releases and AIX® releases (just to name a few common Unixes) would consume considerable effort that would not be applied to improve the product but to maintain compatibility of binary versions of the software for the specific operating systems.
    • What it means for operating system compatibility
      • We do not say that a JS7 Controller cannot run for Solaris®. We are saying that we will not ship a binary version for Solaris.
      • Users of the Open Source License are free to build the JS7 Controller and JOC Cockpit for any platforms. We provide Build Instructions for Windows and Linux. The instructions for Linux should be easily adaptable for other Unixes.
      • Customers of the Commercial License have to check with SOS if their build of the JS7 Controller and JOC Cockpit for platforms different from Windows and Linux are accepted for ongoing support.
        • SOS will not accept obligations for support if sources have been modified by users.
        • SOS will accept obligations for support if the customer provides the required engineering know how to build binaries from sources for the specific platform and provides reasonable expertise for platform-specific parts of the software.
  • Platform-independent JS7 Agent
    • The Agent is designed from scratch for platform-independence and includes no platform requirements except for a Java Virtual Machine.
    • Due to the software design there is no limitation to platforms.
